Disappointing run tonight. I was hoping for a confidence boosting start to my 16 week marathon training plan, but it wasn't to be. The goal was to run a couple of easy miles to the track (which went well), then run 2 miles at Short Tempo pace (6:08 per mile) before jogging home nice and easily. For some reason I ran my first ST mile way too fast (5:51) and from that point on the workout was essentially over. The intense heat was a factor, but I'm not going to make excuses - I messed things up and I'll have to do better next time. The second ST mile was a painful 6:29. In fact, by the time I finished the second mile, I almost felt close to the dangerous point of heat exhaustion. I made the sensible decision to walk/run the 2 miles home where even a slow jog caused my heart rate to soar to 180 beats per minute, which I'm almost positive is my current maximum.
A couple of hours later, after a cool shower and couple of sports drinks, I feel much better and am trying to analyze what I can do better next time. Live and learn as they say...
